This story unexpectedly sucked me in. The build-up is slow but piece by piece everything is coming together while the tension grows. The main character is unlikable and clearly in the wrong in many ways but I found myself rooting for her nonetheless. Every character in this story is distinct and well-drawn and none of their mutual interactions ever failed to make sense, which really vows for the writing. There is a lot of inner monologue too, which was cleverly written in past tense,  keeping me on my toes because I constantly wondered what was actually happening or alternatively, about to happen.
I read some complaints about the ending being rushed or flat but I disagree. I liked how it didn’t wrap up with a nice bow. Furthermore it shouldn’t be missed that the the main character actually did resolve her biggest issue: after all these years she finally found the strength to stand up against Mother.
This book was vivacious and intriguing and a truly delicious debut.
