The Strangers
by Katherena Vermette
This book is tough. The general themes - losing your children to the system, incarceration, generational trauma, etc - are all tough. And the story is bleak.
But, it is excellently written. And despite the tough themes I had no issue returning to it. Cedar's youthful, forward looking voice really helped bring me through the book.
Luckily for everyone the end is hopeful, and if you're having trouble getting through the beginning of this book, I hope you stick it out.
