A Lick of Frost by Laurell K. Hamilton

4.0

Though this book is familiar for the series while also treading new, intense ground for the overall series arc, I think I’m getting into a reading slump, because this series is no longer holding as much spark for me.

I still find the intimate character moments and the fey lore to be the best parts of the series, but the beginning felt very slow and it has taken a long time to feel like a true, genuine threat to Merry. The stakes have finally been raised and there have been consequences. Most of the dialogue is still very strong as well, so the words always have impact and meaning.

Maybe I’m just unfocused, but much of the plot seemed to meander and happen almost at random. I enjoy the magical elements, but they are beginning to feel like deus ex machinas.

I will give the next book a chance, but I feel I’m losing more steam. Still recommended for fans of fey romance and spicy books.
