The Bird King is captures a rare period of time in history captured in history, when the Spanish conquest eliminated the remaining practicing muslim and moors. The protagonist falls flat at times, but is buoyed in my opinion by her companion, a cartographer on the run for his skills, he is also queer
The theme of the "Conference of Kings" adds beautiful imagery during the chase and quest for freedom. Coasting along the seas, hoping to find their forever home.
The ending is a bit of an emotional gut punch in dual meaningDid they really find somewhere safe to live? Did they live out the days happily on an island protected? Or is this simply a metaphor for the after life
