So Much Pretty
by Cara Hoffman
Although this book was interesting, with a somewhat unique premise, it was very hard to read. The basic story line goes like this: after completing med school, hippy-ish couple move with their young daughter to rural community, searching for a more "natural" way to live, but find that small town is ruled by masochistic old-boys club, who are protecting the local dairy (now entrenched in a global business) from outsiders who poke their nose too close to the dangerous chemicals and waste being leached into the soil and water supply. In the middle of all this, a young girl goes missing -- and eventually another girl finds herself on the brink of the same fate. I mention that it is hard to read, not because of the content, but because the author tells the story from so many points of view, jumping back and forth in time over 20+ years. To a degree, it involved the reader more than just moving linearly (?) across time -- but I really felt it was overdone. I would only recommend this book to someone who wants to work for it.
