True Grit by Charles Portis
5.0

All books start with 5 stars.
This one keeps all 5.
Excellent characters. Especially excellent heroine.
Exciting story. Interesting transitional point in history.

Rooster is terrible and wonderful. Just like most complex people. Maddie is fearless and judgmental and shrewd but still very much child. LaBeauf might be full of himself but he can back it up and shows up when it counts. Even the bag guys aren’t all bad.
The movies are great. The book is better.
