Paradise by Abdulrazak Gurnah

Just like the narrator, I felt like I experienced this book with a certain observational detachment.

I'm always frustrated when reading books like this one. The descriptions were beautiful, and I often had to slow my reading pace to take them in. This is one for the adjective lovers. Because of the narrator's emotional detachment from the main plot lines, it reads as a portrait of the Africa that it's set in that is propulsed forward by the multiple events and travels that happen to Yusuf, the main character.

However, I found myself really struggling to be engrossed in most of the plot lines. The book is cut into acts, which are themselves cut into chapters. Most of these acts felt unfinished to me.

I do realise however that I may not have had sufficient knowledge of the context or enough patience to look it up to fully comprehend what I was reading. I would recommend this book to someone with those requirements in mind.
