A Stolen Life
by Jaycee Dugard
challenging
dark
emotional
informative
sad
medium-paced
Growing up in California, I was very aware of this case, both the kidnapping and disappearance and then Jaycee's discovery and reappearance. What an incredible story of resilience and it gave me insight into her experience as a child captured. I know there are people who question her experience and her "lack" of trying to escape. But her story provides some context of her experience. She was so, so young and I suspect when you are conditioned to live one way, you do not question whether there are alternative ways to live. Her story is an incredible story of survival and I appreciate her willingness to share her side of the story. In a world of true crime podcasts and Netflix biopics, it's refreshing to read a candid memoir without the Hollywood frills.
