The Monster's Den by Jillian West

Pros

Storyline
I very appreciated the pacing of the book. Honestly I often find myself losing patience and dnf a lot of slow burn books. So I was hooked in early with this book and kept listening until the end.

Heroine
I know a lot of people like fiesta heroines and coupled with a compelling plot I do too. All too often in Alien books (as an example) the dynamic seems to be Heroine wants to go back to shitty life on Earth and treats Alien mate like crap. She argues, he pleads and I hate them both. Emerson wasn’t a pushover but she also didn’t constantly fight with her mates, She didn’t decide she knew better and runaway I really enjoyed her character.

Single Mother
I love single parent books. It’s just a trope that I very much enjoy. Although the kids are never portrayed accurately and are usually conveniently absent until the story needs them or they are ridiculously Angelic. The child in this book wasn’t either and I really enjoyed that as the way it was done was believable.

Interesting Pregnancy
She ended up pregnant with quads one from each of her mates and as someone who loves the pregnancy trope I was so happy with this. She got pregnant from at least halfway through the book as well so I really enjoyed that!

Cons

Too Short
This is the first book in a standalone reverse harem book. There were too many characters including the harem and side characters with their own storylines (also I assume future books). I couldn’t remember who was whom and whether they were in the harem or not. This isn’t a plus.
Also because I listened to it as an audiobook there is no search function to see who the person is. Plus something can be mentioned in the beginning of the book but if you miss it you don’t understand the end.
It felt a bit too crammed in. Reverse Harem really needs to be a series or a longer book. Having finished it I am still mixing up the gargoyle and hellhound.

4 stars just about
Frankly the pregnancy saved it for me or it would have been 3 stars
