I've seen some critique of the FMC being insufferable and selfish and oh-so-frustrating, and, honestly, yeah. Yeah, she was. But also acting illogically tends to be a by-product of mental health struggles. Self-sabotaging occurs because the person isn't able to cope in a neurotypical way. So, why *wouldn't* the FMC act that way if mental health struggles is one of foundational conflicts of the book? Our loathing of her, at times, felt extremely appropriate because she, too, was filled with self-loathing. I might not like the way I felt the second-hand frustration when she made terrible decisions, but I can appreciate the conveyance of how depression surpasses logic, often to the detriment of everyone involved.
So, in all, this book did a great job exploring what happens in relationships when one of the people is experiencing anxiety or depression. My only minor hang up dealt with the ending, but endings are seemingly impossible to make everyone happy. I mean, just look at Seinfeld!
Anyway, if you're looking for a solid romcom that explores mental health issues, start here!
