Ghettoside: A True Story of Murder in America
by Jill Leovy
I had a hard time deciding on a rating for this one. It really is two books in one. The first, a four star effort, is a journalistic account of several homicides and homicide detectives in Los Angeles. It's a fascinating and compelling account of what it was like to live and work in that environment during a time when homicide rates, especially among young black males, spiked to horrific levels. The book collapses when the author attempts to explain the various reasons for this spike. This portion of the book is filled with unsupported assumptions, assumed conclusions and contradictory logic. With better analysis, this could have been the best part of the book but instead becomes frustrating filler. Overall worth reading but with caution.
