Seeds of War by João F. Silva

Just....wow. I can't sing enough praise for this debut novel, the world building was fantastic, the magic system reminds me of the powdermage novels, but with a very, very different twist. It has real, life threatening consequnces. Smokesmiths inhale smoke from various herbs to attain different abilities. Very, VERY cool stuff, I can't wait to see how he builds on the magic in the next books

The characters were a high point in the book for me, Orberesis, the God Himself, because of a red orb he finds, he was able to perform a miracle, and in turn becomes a massive con artist, which was brilliant

Gimlore was a woman tried of war, opression, and built a place where the down trodden could come, and live in peace. Her arc was the one I connected with the least. But I still adored her part in the plot.

Rednow, or The Blood Collector, the grizzled veteran, trying to find the correct time to retire, dealing with hearing the voice of his dead sister, which in the end was just...wow. I did NOT see that coming

The book shined when the three POV characters converged, and the action really ramped up.

If you're into Brian Mclellan, Brandon Sanderson, or Joe Abercrombie, I can't suggest this book enough. I can't wait for book two.

I got an ARC of Seeds of War from the author in exchange for an honest review, huge thanks for the chance to read this!
