Shirley by Charlotte Brontë
3.0
There are many elements I enjoyed in a Shirley. I love the occasional direct speech to the reader. When the book opened I thought it was going to have a central theme of class and industrialization conflict. There is a sharp turn somewhere halfway through wherein the book becomes mostly about the pining love story of two girls. I was not particularly attached to Shirley over Caroline. I think the book should have been more aptly named Caroline and Shirley. All of the Greek references were unfortunately lost on me, but I got the general idea at least.
