Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage by Elizabeth Gilbert

2.0

Everything about Elizabeth Gilbert screams "privilege." I also had some thoughts about her reading her own audiobook, since clearly no one edited it for pronunciation. The word "Laotian" in particular was pronounced over 20 times incorrectly. In any case, this book did not convince me one way or another about marriage as an institution. I was more influenced by a NYT article about 1/16 this book's length ten years ago. I don't know why I thought reading Gilbert's work would inspire me; maybe I just had high hopes because Eat, Pray, Love was such a hit way back when. But the sheer unawareness with which she writes turned me off. I would not recommend this book.
