This was quite a slog to get through personally. Cormac McCarthy's writing style is one I've never seen before, which may or may not be a good thing as there's plenty of what I would deem "fluff", basically pointless descriptions that don't drone on and don't add a whole lot constantly getting in the way of what promises to be a very interesting take on the wild west.
Interspersed with the "fluff" are some of the most engaging pieces of writing, all stemming from the character of Judge Holden, a very mysterious character who oozes philosophy and questioning. Every time he goes into one of his lectures you're glued to this book which is what kept me going to the end.
There is plenty of desolate and dark imagery throughout this read, a real depressing look into the world of scalp hunting and how truly bleak the world likely was in this time. Death and violence at every junction, despair and hopelessness follows everywhere and even when it feels like things are going well and our characters are going to make it, you get kicked down some more.
I wanted to love this book and after hearing all the praise it gets I thought it would be an unbelievable read, but the overall dullness of the "fluff" brings it down in my opinion.
I'd still recommend it for the character of the Judge alone as he is the driving force behind the book and makes the read worth it to see some truly terrifying takes on philosophy and the world.
