The Divine Comedy: Volume 1: Hell
by Dante Alighieri
This is a fascinating book, still the book that gives us the most detailed idea of the vision of hell, full of flames, ironic punishments and damnation. However what struck me is the extent to which this guide to the great Christian concept takes so much of its inspiration from classical ideas from Tartarus. The other thing is that this universal text is such a personal set of beefs about late 13th century Italian politics. This in particular made it a book that felt like you needed to do a lot of extra reading
