A Storm of Swords: Steel and Snow
by George R.R. Martin
Lordy but this was a long one. I think with GRRM you really have to persevere with the beginning part of each book to really get to the meat of the story. And then whoosh - you really can't put it down. I think standout chapters in this book were Catelyn and Sansa. I like Tyrion but some of his chapters had the somewhat annoying undertone of petulant child. And his constant surprise at Cersei's hatred of him seems to naive the Imp. Ayra is clearly the most typical fantasy character (girl, treated badly goes on a long journey etc etc). Sansa while annoying is very very realistic and I keep forgetting that she's so young. 13!
The best part (as always) is that no one is perfect. Robb Stark has essentially signed his own death warrant by marrying the Westerling and Jaime Lannister has become more and more intriguing. I've watched a few episodes of Season 3 on HBO but wanted to wait until I'd read all of Book 3 - i.e. have my own idea of the Red Wedding before before watching it in full technicolour glory.
I tried to leave this book on the plane between Rio and Porto Alegre but not chance. It's now a very belated wedding present :p
