picked this up bc of how much i loved perfume and pain earlier this summer and was really excited at the prospect of an author i could dive into the backlog of and find banger after banger but im kind of wondering if p&p was just a lightning in a bottle sitch for me??

not nearly as funny as i was expecting and both dawn and emily's whole schtick wore thin on me really quickly - i didn't find the character voice super tight and the arcs they go on were also kind of snooze-y for me. i also think this suffered from too many men for my taste and for what i was expecting after perfume and pain... (sorry).

in perfume & pain, there's a lot of commentary about the lesbian community people took offense to but i saw as kind of a tongue-in-cheek satirical commentary from another lesbian in the community - not really a punch down of any kind, more just like wildly swinging fists at ur local dyke night. there were some lines in here that felt..... really mean spirited though, and they were from BOTH povs. 3/3 makes me suspiciousssss anna!! why are you so freaked out by mascs.... why are we so scared of being perceived as a gross scary lesbian.... i don't even mean this in an accusatory way i mean this in a "i want to study you" way.

anyway i guess overall i just don't really know what the purpose of this is. the "plot twist" seemed very obvious to me and by the halfway point of this novel one of our dual POVs stops serving any kind of purpose. although i will say anna dorn's fascination with milfs and her probably wanting to fuck several real housewives franchise cast members and needing to include this in all her books is like.... well, hats off, i'm saluting, etc.
