A surprisingly good action novel. It manages the almost impossible task of being hardcore intense action with lots of guns and explosions and manly men without being stale or boring or overly shallow. It also manages not to be too up it's own butt about patriotism and isn't violently sexist or racist. That said it's still a post 9/11 military fiction so it does feature your classic middle eastern terrorist group and a lot of the secondary characters (not our leading man, his boss, and the villains of the piece) aren't particularly well developed, though that feels more like a conscious decision and keeps the pace up, I expect that will change in the sequel. Overall a hearty recommendation if you're looking for a thrilling action novel in the vein of rainbowsix or ghost recon.
