What a lovely cozy mystery! And unique too- I mean have you ever read a book about a medieval, middle aged, Welsh Monk solving a murder while also participating in a mission to bring the remains of a Welsh saint to England before? I hadn’t.
I was so enamored with Brother Cadfael, Sioned, Father Huw, and the people of Gwytherin that I think I would’ve enjoyed the book even if there had been no murder. That plot wasn’t anything novel or complex (if I’d tried harder I probably could’ve figured out whodunit. Even though I didn’t, I wasn’t surprised when it was revealed.) but it was interesting all the same. The subplots were also simple but pleasant to read.
I did find the prose to be rather flowery in terms of word choice and sentence structure, which did make the book a little tricky to read in some places. But once I got used to it, some of that difficulty eased. I also found the ending to be rather unsatisfying (and a bit morally grey). I was considering it a 4 star book up until that point.
Other than that, a truly cozy story with a delightful cast of characters. If you’re into cozy mysteries and want a more unique protagonist and backdrop, I think this series is worth checking out. I will definitely be reading on!
