Tell Me I'm Worthless by Alison Rumfitt
medium-paced
house of leaves for transfem people who hated house of leaves... but, unfortunately, i am transmasc. i don't expect transfeminine artists to make their work about me, really... but not wanting to feel vaguely hated when i pick up a trans book by a trans person doesn't seem like so much to ask?
talking mainly aboutila, the transphobic major characters, secretly turning out to be a closeted trans man... come on. that feels like assuming all homophobes are secretly in the closet, which is obviously bullshit? and ila feels far more reprehensible than alice, too, which compounds the issue. like ila/harry, i'm also transmasculine and jewish, and the way the novel treated him felt fucking bad... yes ok it's a novel about how we're all a little bit fascist deep down, or whatever, but still. bad bad bad.
whatever. just not for me, i guess.
