A very cute novella for the maiden lane series. It picks up Hippolyta’s story from the Duke of Sin.
Running for her life, Hippolyta looks nothing like the richest heiress in the country. Matthew, believing her to be some kind of trickster, doesn’t reveal that he is an Earl. They are both free simply to be people.
He is initially suspicious of her, and she is initially terrified from her kidnapping ordeal. They spar, fight and bicker. But all that time alone in the carriage and they start to feel something.
The building passion turns into a public display of affection, which leads to a quick wedding. Then the married couple has to deal with Hippolyta’s secret shame.
She learns to embrace who she is and not be ashamed. He is a steadfast supporter and protector. It’s cute.
Viscount d’Arque is a supporting character, ahead of his own novella next, but there’s no story set up.
Two full spice scenes. They’re ok, too short.
