Halsey did not hold back when writing this. It was brutally human and honest. I went through all the emotions reading it, and I think that's always a sign of a great poetry collection. Some of the poems read more like short stories, but I really liked those one in particular. They weren't as polished as other poems I've read, but I think that furthered my appreciation for them. Humans aren't polished, nor are most human experiences, so why should our feelings and the way we express them be? It makes sense to me the way Halsey chose to share their stories– I think it was great storytelling on their part.
I listened to this as an audiobook, and that was a great experience. Halsey's voice was incredibly soothing at certain points, and almost violently harsh at other points. It was perfect. I highly recommend this to people looking for a good poetry audiobook!
I will, however, be purchasing a physical copy so I can annotate it!
