Moon and the Mars by Kia Corthron

5.0

Probably not for everyone, but I really, really loved this. Young Theo and her messy families are great company, but the real draw is the time and place, - Civil War era Five Points, NYC - which is so intriguing and rarely written about it in the fiction I read, except perhaps in the background. I had been a little nervous about this book going in as reviews had made me think this might be too experimental in style than I prefer as books described that way are often too navel-gazing for me, but no. The style choices take a backseat to the story and the voices of the characters, which is the way I prefer it.

I went back and forth between print and audio, and Robin Miles really just does a brilliant job with the narration.
