Irreversible
by Chelley St Clair, Jennifer Hartmann
Issues:
1. The timekeeper: His character often felt like a Disney villain to me. He would monologue to Isaac, telling him things I wouldn’t think a captor would normally reveal to a captive, and I found myself reminded of some of the cartoon villains I remember watching as a kid. If he had been more elusive and mysterious, I think I would have liked his character and the role he played more.
2. Everly: The more the story went on, the more I disliked her. She had a second chance to choose Isaac, instead of Jasper, and she chose to get in the car with the husband that she divorced and got with her bestie while she was missing? Hmmm okay. Actions speak louder than words, and her actions toward Isaac told me she wasn’t really that into him. She smelled bleach in Jasper’s car and wasn’t suspicious? Jasper shows up after the Timekeeper and she still thinks Jasper isn’t involved? I wanted to shake her.
3. Everly’s family gaslighting her into forgiving them for their betrayal: Every time Everly talked to someone from her past after the big reveal of betrayal in the hospital, they would try and make her see their side. There was no apology, no acknowledgement of how they hurt her. Especially her mom. What good mom sides with her daughter’s best friend by getting with her husband while her daughter is missing? 😅 Not a mom I’d wish on anyone I know…
4. The spice: The scene between the wall with Isaac and Everly made me cringe 4 times. I wasn’t into that and almost skipped the chapter. And I love spice! But I didn’t love whatever that was 🙃.
5. The pacing: Some parts felt too long, and other parts felt too short. I don’t have specific examples, but I do feel like the romance didn’t get nearly enough time while other scenes did.
Do I recommend this book? Maybe. Some of my issues could be relayed to personal preference, and you may not take issue with what I did. Give it a try!
