Don't Call Me a Hurricane by Ellen Hagan

3.0

Okay. So I have mixed feelings about this book. And before I begin, I'd like to think I have some sort of credibility on this book. I am a volunteer climate activist, and I also live in a town similar to the setting of the novel in terms of development by city folks.

As much as I loved the climate activism part of this novel, it just didn't really fit in with the whole protest scheme (they were trying to stop development on the marsh.) However, it was nice seeing Fridays for Future and the whole of climate activism represented in a novel like this.

As for the writing of the book, it just didn't make sense. I did not find the poetry overly striking, personally I feel this book could have been alot better if the same plot was not executed through verse. I found it kind of slow, and boring at some points.

Characters. I highly relate to the subplot of people from the city visiting and overrunning small towns, so I could highly emphasize with the characters on that subject. Where I live, obnoxious city people are called 'cidiots' instead of 'shoobies' like in the novel. But would anyone, or does anyone I know make hating people from the city who visit their small town their entire personality? NO. It's just not accurate. As for Milo, I just don't get the hype. To be honest, I found him very bland, and he was a performative activist. I would have liked the novel alot better if they didn't end up together. I understand what the author was going for (kind of an enemies to lovers climate justice edition) but it just didn't work.
All in all, I enjoyed the setting of the novel, and some parts were highly relatable, so it's getting 3 stars. !
