This book was well written and I found myself continuing to read it to follow the plot but the rest of it just wasn't for me. I couldn't really bring myself to care about the characters or setting (which was unexpected usually a dark academia/magic institution premise really draws me in).  Mostly everything just felt miserable which, granted, was kind of the point or at least the driving motivation for most of the characters.

tldr: good pacing and prose, but simply wasn't for me.
