I've read quite a few previous books by this author but none in the series this belongs to. Whilst that didn't really matter, and it could be read as a standalone, it may have added to the story if I knew the background. It also means now I'd be loathe to go back and read the earlier ones.
A small boat carrying immigrants to the UK capsizes, leaving only one survivor. Evie and Cyrus witness the aftermath, and Cyrus is asked to consult with the police. Evie's behaviour leads him to believe that she has some link to what happened.
Together they try to unlock the secrets of her past in a bid to solve the mystery of who is involved in the people smuggling operation now.
Despite being a compelling read, this novel also does a decent job in presenting both sides of the arguments around trying to stop these small boats and the wider issue of immigration in the UK
