Savage Inequalities: Children in America's Schools by Jonathan Kozol

5.0

This book made me angry and sad, but that should be the reaction of anyone reading this. What makes me angriest and saddest is how little has changed in 30 years.

Every American should read this and sit with it as an opportunity for self-reflection. The vast gaps in funding between the schools of the “haves” and “have nots” still persists, and is made worse by punitive policies that cut funding to “failing” schools.

As states increasingly implement vouchers and other programs that strip funding away from public schools, the stark tale told through this well-researched book is a must-read. Unfortunately, money and power continue and likely will continue to perpetuate unequal and inequitable schools. I can only hope enough people understand and push for change.
