It would be difficult to call this book anything other than epic.
Spanning decades, this novel comes alive in on the streets of Florence. The weather, the food, the art, the drink, the people; this is what makes Florence Florence. And this is a writer who understands Italy and Italians. Winman has achieved something quite special in these pages.
I will admit that I enjoyed the opening of this novel, but it wasn’t until I was a quarter of the way through that this book really started to shine. Perhaps that’s because of the large cast of characters that one has to get to know well first. But by the end, even Col was a hit with me.
There’s something so beautifully sad about this book and, although I’ve only spent about 2 weeks with these characters, I feel as though I’ve been with them for years.
I recommend this if you want to read something that will consume you for the foreseeable future.
