This delightful, music-heavy (closed-door) romp, with lovely contours of Hispanic immigration to the US, is a perfect reworking of a centerpiece of my childhood. I picked it up at exactly the right moment and loved every page. (Even, coincidentally, being in one of the towns featured early in the tour, able to literally go and see what the author was describing.) I love the way Córdova turned a semi-whack story about a teenager having to literally chose between body modification or her voice into an empowering story of self-discovery and chosen joy. With mermaids! It’s perfect. Go read it.
