Fledgling
by Sharon Lee, Steve Miller
This was a toss up between three and four stars so choose whichever number you prefer and go with that as my rating. This was a slow-to-start sci fi read but once they were aboard ship the pacing improved dramatically and I was hooked from there till the end.
My brother-in-law recommended this book to my husband, who passed it along to me. At first I could not understand their interest, but then my comments above wound up echoing my husband's comments when he gave me the book. So, stick with it and you are likely to have your appetite whetted.
There were a few items that stood out for me, one of them being all the rules. If you read the book, you will know what I mean. My inclination would be to rebel, but then, at what cost. The next item was the game of bowli and the bowli ball, which immediately had me thinking of Quidditch and the Golden Snitch. Yet another point was the importance of research and validating information. It seems most timely in this day and age of fake news…
Lastly, the Afterword is as interesting as the book. For more about the authors and the Liaden Universe, check out their website.
