God, I absolutely loved this book. I listened to it as an audiobook, and the narrator Suehyla El-Attar did a great job with the voices.
Siti and Fatma’s passion for one another and their hilarious chemistry was one of my favorite things about the novel. But beyond that Fatma as an investigator learning that her world was a lot less black and white was done in a fun and easy to get with narrative. This story covers the struggle of a post-colonial world, as well as interfaith connections. I loved that there was notable power in both religious groups shown and that neither was disparaged totally one way or another. Every group- the police, the investigators, the women wanting more rights, the poor community etc. We saw their power and issues represented well. The only ones who didn’t get any slack were the english whites and thank gods because I couldn’t be more tired of that.
I am not Arabic or Egyptian in any way, but I have a great love for the old gods so it was a lovely surprise to see them represented in Siti and Ahmad.
This book was almost a cozy read with how much I enjoyed it! Between Fatma and Hadia finding their footing, each side charactering getting a fully circle story, it felt like no lose ends were left. I just wish we had more of it! How do I beg P. Djeli Clark for a sequel??
