A coming of age story but with a difference. Centring around what it means to be an immigrant and creates a portrait around fifteen year old Ana CanciĆ³n, who marries Juan Ruiz who takes her to New York City. To give her family a better life, she has to say yes so they can eventually follow her from the Dominican Republic to America.

When Juan has to return due to the political conflict, Ana has the opportunity to explore the city and become more independent. This is a story that follows a woman who learns how to stand up for herself and finds her voice while navigating America as an immigrant to support her family back home.

Reading this wonderful book has opened up my eyes with regards to the reality of immigration and what families will do in order to achieve a better quality of life.
