This book is extremely important and well written, though also very brutal. While the depth of all kind of abuse was not surprising given this tells the story of a plantation, I was not prepared for the amount of on page and referenced sexual assault, and would urge caution for those who are triggered by this. Because some of the situations/memories involved children, I think this should have been noted at the beginning of the book.

Around the halfway point I almost stopped reading because of it, however I persevered and was very glad I did. The second half has significantly less of this content offers some bits of justice woven into the horrible reality.
