Akata Witch
by Nnedi Okorafor
A neat idea - American girl moves with her Nigerian-born parents back to Africa. She is a bit of an outcast and finds out she is a witch born to non-witch parents. She meets other young witches and gets a huge quest.
If you feel yourself wanting to say "Mudblood" and "Muggle", you can get a sense for what this book is. Okorafor is very bright, but this is just a tepid riff on Potter. It is most fun when she introduces us to classic "trickster" characters, and least fun when she tries to be cosmopolitan and "cool" with the Nigerian dialect and stories.
I read it to my daughter, and she enjoyed it.
