The Sky Is Everywhere
by Jandy Nelson
I don't even care if you tell me this book is predictable or generic. i am telling you right now that i would jump at the chance to meet a Joe Fontaine.
I have come across many YA books that try to tackle the topic of grief and about 90% of them have failed to resonate with me but this one was a winner. I think it's the poems that ultimately won me over, as well as the strategically placed quirks of Uncle Big and Grams.
Most of the time their relationship was rushed and I think Nelson could have extended the story for another 50 pages but that would have required a real relationship to happen between Lennie and the boys instead of the surreal amount of lustful situations that girl got herself into (i seriously don't know the time span of this novel, it feels like it happened over a single weekend)...basically it was all too rushed and that's what kills a part of the story for me.
Not to mention the whole "writing on my jeans" thing Lennie does, JUST STOP THAT!!
