An Accident of Stars
by Foz Meadows
DNF
I very rarely do not finish a book, and when those rare moments happen, it's almost always due to poor writing... however, that's not ~necessarily~ the case with this book.
It's quite clear that a lot of time and effort went into the World Building, and kudos for that. I also greatly enjoy the diversity of both skin colors and sexualities across the board of characters and this new world. I also am a big fan of a 90% female led cast of characters.
Despite all that, I am unable to continue this book. I simply can not find a reason to CARE about the plot or the characters. Don't get me wrong, the characters are as diverse in personalities as they are in race and sexuality, however there are just. TOO. MANY. It's like playing checkers but there's a piece on literally every square of the board. Too many characters are being squeezed into too small a space, and for a brand new world, that makes it very, very hard to get attached to a character and thus care about them, their cause, their fight, etc.
Some nit-picky things I did not like;
- licking of the lips before speaking can be mentioned in moderation, but was greatly over done here.
- goes through the effort to specify our "main" Heroine's white skin tone as rare for this planet, then proceeds to throw her into the only group of white skinned people in the city? I just? ????
- the Gods of this realm also run into the same problem as the main Characters - too many in a tight space with not enough info per individual.
I DNF at page 146, which I think is fair all things considered. I'm giving this 3 stars as, again, the strength of writing did not cause me to not finish and I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who can appreciate this book, world and cast of characters where I could not.
