Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

I’m not going to lie and say this book didn’t play a part in quitting a job that was making my life miserable. It’s also a story that many people cannot make a reality, but is admirable from afar. I think we all know what happens in the book, but I think it is to be said that life really does have a mysterious way of working out when you step away from the noise and indulge, spoil, soothe, and love ourselves. However, it did come across as “white woman fantasy,” and there are some parts where I question how she describes the people from the different places she’s visited. I would like to think that if this book was written today, there would be some more consideration into how the world is viewed through a privileged white woman. I can give the author some credit though as she puts a note in front of the 10th Anniversary edition in which she speaks of the letters that call her a “bitch,” she recognizes her own naïveté and how lucky she was to make such a trip that completely changed her life.
