Reading my third Wheel of Time book in as many weeks makes you realize how good the series must be that I’m running through them this fast. However, The Dragon Reborn was the first of the series to make me have hesitation in the investment. As much as I like the lovely ladies of The White Tower, asking me to endure 80% of this book there is a tough order. Nynaeve, Egwene, and Elayne dominate this book and while I think their Hogwarts training to make it to Accepted is interesting, it isn’t carry an entire novel interesting. The decision to take The Dragon Reborn out of a book title The Dragon Reborn until basically the second to last chapter was a ballsy decision by Robert Jordan. Perrin takes the lead from the Two River trio in this one and gets more development and even a possible love interest. Mat finally gets some time to do more than be sick and I can now see why folks within the WoT community like him so much. But Rand is pretty much just a background character this go around.
So why the high star rating? Because, like Great Hunt before it, the third act is an adrenaline-filled thrill ride. It’s almost like you can tell Jordan had originally planned for this to be a trilogy and just tweaked some things in the end to give it room to keep going, because the conclusion here is all sorts of satisfying. It’s not perfect, but it doesn’t have to be when there are 11 books left in this story. I like all the characters and I’m glad they’re not going to drag the whole “is he/isn’t he The Dragon” plot out for 7-8 books. Shadow Rising seems like it could take an entirely new direction after how this one ends and I’m here for it.
The Good: Moiraine having that first real WOW moment vs Ba’lal had me actually fist-pumping.
The Bad: The politics at The White Tower aren’t exactly page turner type stuff.
The Ugly: How many times Jordan has to tell me one of the ladies folded her arms under her breasts. And ffs, Nynaeve, quit pulling your GD braid already.
