The Lost Steersman by Rosemary Kirstein

3.0

This was not as good as the first two. Part of the reason was the scale was much smaller (plot and setting), and the other part was it just...wasn't very interesting. For a while the
Spoilerincreasing frequency of demon attacks
was interesting. You could wonder, what's causing this? Is it her? Or him? Or something else?

But then we get dragged into small town small-mindedness, and related crap. It's boring. If I wanted that, I'd go to town meetings. Then when there's *finally* some movement in the plot, we get this weird digression about
Spoilerhow demons are people, and talk by crapping, and so on
. Intellectually it should be interesting, but it just isn't.

I know I sound down on this, and really I am. A few things save it from 2-star land. 1 - Steffie. He's _super_ interesting, and I'm glad he's so central to this book. 2 - the overall plot is furthered, although just *barely*. That's it. And really, it's just Steffie (Steffi? whatever). He save this from being a chore. I hope #4 is much better.
