After hearing Faber speak at the 2015 Writers' Week and purchasing his recently-published book, The Book of Strange New Things, I decided that I should read his first novel before I launched myself into this. Quite simply, The Crimson Petal and the White is one of the most satisfying and compelling novels I have read in a very long time. Fortunately, I took it with me on a ten-day holiday and was able to immerse myself in Faber's post-modern tale of the feminism, poverty, respectability and deceit of 19th century England for as long as I wanted ( which was a lot of the time) until I reached the end and emerged reluctantly into the 21st century. So much to reflect on and needing seriously to reread once the first experience has settled.
