I’m not big on nonfiction or memoirs in general, but I’m a sucker for the Penguin covers and this book is small enough to travel with, so… here we are! The story grabbed me from the very beginning; I love the way Saint-Exupery describes nature and the adventure that is flying. Unfortunately, the middle third of the book contained a lot of racist, islamophobic, and orientalizing stereotypes that made it difficult to read. It did get better towards the end, once he started telling the story of his crash and near-death experience in the desert. 5 stars for adventure storytelling and ruminations on the beauty of the natural world, negative stars for racism and colonialism.
Moderate: Death, Racism, Slavery, Suicidal thoughts, Xenophobia, Islamophobia, Religious bigotry, Injury/Injury detail
Minor: Alcohol, Colonisation, War
