Moll Flanders
by Daniel Defoe
A strange story. Very repetitive. First I did this, then that, then that, and so on. The ending abrupt and unsatisfying. Parts of the story were strangely charming, and parts had some pizzazz. Moll describes her fall into crime, and Defoe neither makes her a sympathetic character nor makes us sympathize with her. Moll does not seem to have an inner life unless it is to chastise her criminality, and that was what really lost it for me, as she just seems to be this force of survival but without any inner turmoil or desires to explain her single-minded motivation.
