The fact that Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind was published in the 1980s is both inspiring and concerning. Inspiring because people like Miyazaki were already concerned about the future of our planet and humanity. Concerning because the issues he explores are still ones we face today—issues with even more dire and immediate projections—yet no one is doing anything still.

I already loved watching the film, but the manga expands even more on this post apocalyptic world. This series closely echoes Miyazaki’s earlier and equally brutal work, Shuna’s Journey. If you’re game to read about the depravity of humanity and how even the best of us can succumb to our worst inclinations, this is the series for you. Heartbreaking and gut-wrenching, but an unrelenting reminder of what we all have to lose, Nausicaä is the only climate fiction we’ll ever need.
