The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

4.0

This novel was so eloquent and surprising. I never realized how far short the popular trope of Dorian Gray falls of Oscar Wilde's story. I found myself drawn in to the story, as well as the story behind the story. It drove me to research more about Wilde's life and other work. The dialogue was intelligent and incisive, and the plot was surprising despite the story's ubiquitous presence in popular culture.

A low point in the narrative was the multiple paragraphs given to describing historical or mythical stories of precious gems and tapestries, comprising one of the longest chapters of the book. It reminded me of the self-indulgent chapters of Moby Dick about a whale's biology. Also, Wilde seems excessively fond of the word "languidly," so that I began to chuckle whenever it appeared.

Otherwise, the book is rightfully designated as a classic. It is clever, deep, and haunting. Highly recommend.
