An Easy Death by Charlaine Harris
3.0

This was a really fun book, easy to read and with fantastic world building. It is set in a post Spanish flu world, where the flu killed the President and Vice-President of the US, leaving the country fractured and primed for deconstruction. Also, the Russian Romanov family managed to escape Russia before the revolution, and the Western parts of the former US are now the Holy Russian Empire. Magic is rife in the world and there is a lawlessness, meaning that people need to employ 'gunnies' to protect them, especially on journeys. Lizbeth Rose is one such gunnie. She has just lost her whole crew in an ambush by bandits - but she managed to get the family she was protecting to their destination. She actually needs to rest, but when approached by a pair of Russian wizards, or 'grigoris' as they are known, she reluctantly accepts their quest. They are looking for a man, Oleg, or his brother and daughter and need a gunnie to help them as grigoris aren't always welcome. Great first book in this new to me series.
