They Called Us Exceptional: And Other Lies That Raised Us by Prachi Gupta

challenging dark emotional reflective sad tense

5.0

a very moving memoir centered around the harm the author experienced as a result of the model minority myth, the idea that a person’s worth is tied to their success in a capitalist system, and the misogynistic worldview of her father; the ways we minimize our sense of self in order to fit into our defined role within these problematic definitions

the author is able to detail how she takes control of her own narrative. what she has to leave behind in order to do so. the way her relationships with her family members fracture and fall apart when she refuses to surrender to the person they expect her to be. this is so heartfelt and deeply personal
