When Devils Sing was a highly anticipated read for this year, and it did not disappoint. Packed with intrigue, rich entitled people doing evil entitled stuff, and a whole lot of soul that I felt deep in my bones, I will not stop thinking about this book for a long time.
A small southern town in Georgia with very prominent economic inequality is gearing up to celebrate the long-awaited Cicada Festival, a celebration that happens once every thirteen years, ushered in by the thirteen-year emergence of a particularly loud and obnoxious chorus of cicadas.
The story is told in the alternating perspective of four newly graduated teenagers, Isaiah, Neera, Sam, and Reid. Each are dealing with their own issues with their own very different lives, but each of them are connected by the disappearance of a local teen.
As each of the teens' paths begin to cross and converge, they uncover dark secrets about the power the Lake Clearwater community holds over the town of Carrion, how they came to that power, and how the old folk song about three devils comes into play.
Thank you Netgalley and Macmillan for the early copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
