Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto

4.0

Few years ago, a friend recommended me a movie, Amelie. I watched it and instantly fell in love. It had one of the most beautiful portrayal of loneliness.

Recently I came across "Kitchen" by Banana Yashimoto and after reading it, I realized it captured the same loneliness in an entirely different , but equally beautiful way.

I haven't read much by contemporary Japanese authors. The ones I've read are by Haruki Murakami and Yoko Ogawa. But I think I can say that they have a unique way of describing mundane events of day to day life in a surreal way.

This book contains two short stories, Kitchen and Moonlight Shadow. Both of them are about loss. It portrays how the protagonists deal with their loss in their own way.

I love the writing. I love how she exploits the characters to bring out the deeper aspects of grief. I love how the characters try to fill each others' voids created by their own kind of grief and finally how the characters accept grief which have become a part of them.
